Whether it be the conceptual intent of its artist, an exploration of form and colour, or its emotional evocations, there is something about art that exists beyond its physical form. Because of this artworks of differing mediums often find common dialogues. With this in mind, Side by Side explores the relationships between print and painting.
The exhibition pairs prints by some of our most highly collected artists with painted works from the James Makin Gallery collection. In each pairing, the common thread between each is teased out and placed on display. However, in doing so, each work’s unique interpretation of that ‘thread’ is made apparent.
This exhibition is a celebration of contradictions: art’s similarities and its diversity, Side by Side.
