Ella Noonan’s work draws on the natural world, playfully depicting plants, birds and animals in their surroundings. Noonan’s black and white, pen-and-ink drawings and earthenware sculptural pieces are both a depiction and a design. The patterned subjects and backgrounds merge. The overall effect is suggestive of wallpaper or printed textile. She gains inspiration from her travels and from books on botany and zoology to create pictures that feature birds and animals which are imaginary, although they may seem somewhat familiar to the viewer. As Noonan strives to bring these creatures to life, imbuing each with personality, she also aspires to create things of beauty.
