The winter solstice – that moment when day and night are equal and on the point of swapping places – was a popular time for werewolf births and transformations in classic lore. The rise of Christianity saw the solstice transmuted to Christmas Eve, with the added argument that anyone who had the audacity to challenge Christ's birthright had to be a werewolf.

My sister-in-law, Rima, always felt robbed by her December 24 birthday. Her leg and eyes feature in this work, while her Lithuanian-Australian cultural heritage informs the dingo body and wolf paws and tail. The background is based on a photograph taken by my husband on our winter honeymoon in Lithuania. The footprints in the snow belong to Lapsis, an escapee wolf from the Kaunas zoo, who was shot two doors down from where we were staying, the very night we arrived in Lithuania.
